Barker Residence and the Olympus of staircases

by on April 23, 2013

staircaseOne of the most refined and admired design houses of Hong Kong is the Barker Residence, a beautiful mansion which enjoys a magnificent view of Victoria Harbour, and has – among other things – one of the most original staircases produced in the last years to a private home.

The house is the first of a series of projects carried out by davidclovers, a prominent American architectural firm founded in 2007 by David Erdman and Clover Lee. The designers in 2009 moved to Hong Kong, where they have since completed six  highly relevant projects, including Barker Residence, which as mentioned contains one of the finest interior staircases in the world.

The basic approach of the design consists in perfecting more points in the areas of the existing layout and improve their mutual integration. The purpose is to reprocess the unit horizontally and vertically using a series of slightly bent walls and ceilings artificially illuminated for bending space around corners and through the planes.

The staircase unfolds between the upper and lower levels. A chandelier above gives an effervescent glow. The beautiful interior staircase winds its way through the two floors of the apartment in Hong Kong, and is based on slanted walls and twisting exasperated but harmonics.

The floor and the lower part of the walls are finished in wood. The scale is integrated with a fireplace and some sophisticated entertainment systems. Overall, the effect is highly stylized, and places this work of international design in the Olympus of interior staircases.
